#2 Functional Polymeric Materials Conference

05 Aug 2015 - 08 Aug 2015

Ascot, UK

Chairs

Nathan Gianneschi
Northwestern University

Synopsis

This second Functional Polymeric Materials conference seeks to bring together leaders from across the field of polymer chemistry, and will include experts in the development of new methodologies, novel applications and will include both fundamental and materials aspects of polymer science. Topics will include new innovations in polymer synthesis and functionalization, with particular focus on structure-property relationships. Applications will also be covered in the areas of drug delivery, smart biomaterials, complex sensing systems, and bioinspired polymeric materials with functionalities that relate to the organization and interactions of their building blocks.

The symposium has invited and contributed talks and posters from scientists from across chemical and materials science disciplines. We believe this blending of people interested in the concepts, rather than specific disciplines, will provide for an enlightening and vibrant multi-day conference.

Key Sessions:

Academics from inorganic, organic, and biological polymeric materials backgrounds will be represented. A broad range of topics will be covered, including:

  • stimuli-responsive materials
  • stimuli-responsive soft matter
  • stimuli-responsive hybrid/composite materials
  • molecular motors
  • swimmers
  • biomolecular self-assembly
  • dissipative / fueled self-assembly
  • bioinspired materials
  • catalysis
  • synthetic methodology
  • catalytic self-assembly
  • activated catalysis at surfaces and interfaces
  • nanoparticle assemblies
  • multi-component systems
  • organized assemblies
  • self-replicating molecular systems
  • self-sorting molecular systems
  • enzyme responsive materials
  • non-equlibrium self-assembly
  • translational applications in biomedicine
  • translational applications in detection systems
  • translational applications in nanotechnology

The History of Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. As a royal residence, the castle is guarded by the Queen's regiments of Foot Guards in their splendid full-dress uniform of red tunics and bearskins. The castle's Round Tower stands where in the 1080's William the Conqueror sited his wooden fort, one day's march from the Tower of London. In the late 1600s Charles II built the State Apartments for entertaining; Samuel Pepys, the seventeenth-century diarist, called Windsor 'the most romantic castle in the world'. The castle we see today was finally completed by George IV in the 1820s.

The History of the London Routemaster Bus

RM548 worked the Capital’s streets for 45 years making her one of London’s longest serving Routemasters. She entered service in December 1960 at Hanwell garage in West London serving routes 207 and 255. She too paid regular visits to Aldenham, where we know her first overhaul was carried out in 1964 with subsequent visits taking place in 1971, 1974, 1976, 1980 and 1985. In between these repairs she worked from Hackney, Upton Park, South Croydon, Poplar, Edmonton, Norwood and Brixton garages.

In 1994 RM548 was withdrawn and sold into private hands where she was used as a promotional vehicle for Yellow Pages and Marie Curie Cancer Care, but due to a shortage of Routemasters in London she was purchased back by London Transport and in 2002 was part of the Routemaster modernisation programme where she was sent to Marshalls of Cambridge for a complete re-build. Her AEC engine was replaced with a more modern Cummings unit and nearly all her traditional 1960s interior and styling was replaced with modern fixtures.

After modernisation, RM548 re-entered service in South London at Battersea and Brixton garages; it was here on the 9th December 2005 that she was one of the last Routemasters to operate on route 159 in front of the world's media on the final day of general Routemaster operations in London.

Finally, in 2006 some 46 years after first entering service, RM548 was retired and sold for preservation. In 2013 RM548 was also lovingly restored back to 1960s livery with original red moquette seats, period advertising and yellow ceiling.
