#2 Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

New Guidelines and Global Strategies for Reducing Cardiovascular Risk

21 Sep 2014 - 24 Sep 2014

El Jadida, Morocco

Chairs

Report

This major conference on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention took place in El Jadida, Morocco, from 21 to 24 September 2014. Its significance was marked by the endorsement by major bodies involved in CVD prevention, notably the European Society of Cardiology, the World Heart Federation, Tous Avec La Coeur (the Moroccan CVD prevention foundation), European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, American Society for Preventive Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology and the California Chapter of the American College of Cardiology.

The meeting was Chaired by Dr Ian Graham (Trinity College, Dublin and the European Society of Cardiology) and Dr. Nathan D. Wong (University of California, Irvine, USA).

Faculty included Dr. Shanthi Mendis (WHO Senior Advisor on non-communicable diseases), Dr. Laurence Sperling (Emory University and American Society for Preventive Cardiology), Kathryn Taubert (American Heart Association), Maciej Banach (Medical University of Lotz, Poland and Polish Lipid Association), Kornelia Kotseva (Imperial College London) and Yaakov Henkin (Soroka Medical Centre, Israel).

The local Moroccan Faculty was equally distinguished and included Dr. Mohamed Alami, Dr. Noureddine Chaouki (Former Director of the Epidemiolgy Department at the Moroccan Ministry of Health), Prof. Abir Saadia (President of the Moroccan Society of Cardiology) and Mrs. Amal Mouzouni (Product Manager, Tecnimede Group).

The mix of skills present, together with a high degree of interactivity, resulted in a meeting of remarkably high quality. The principles of CVD risk estimation and CVD prevention and risk factor control at individual, community and international levels were clearly defined. Current American and European CVD Prevention Guidelines were presented and debated in a robust yet constructive manner. The Moroccan input included a review of their current situation regarding CVD risk factor prevalence and prevention efforts that included active and productive discussion about the challenges and solutions with regards to CVD in Morocco, from the practical to the political, and international implications arising.  Active suggestions were discussed with key discussions for future collaborations regarding national CVD survey planning and implementation and development of audit/registries.

The participation of the WHO, AHA, ESC and European Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (EACPR) at the highest level led to a workshop atmosphere with the beginning of a strategy to develop mutually supportive future activities in line with the international trend towards a more integrated global approach to CVD prevention.

The meeting was seamlessly organized by Fusion Conferences, Ltd.

Tecnimede Ltd generously and enthusiastically supported the meeting in many ways, and the generous support of Sanofi is also gratefully acknowledged.
