2nd Metabolism in Health and Disease Conference

Understanding the Role of Metabolism in Development, Physiology and Disease #MHD22

Synopsis

**Unfortunately, we have had to close the registration deadline early as we have already reached full capacity! We are looking into increasing the number of places, so if you would like to be added to our wait list, please email Chloe Trundle, and we will alert you should any further places become available.**

Much of what we understand about cellular metabolism has come from research by cancer biologists, who have known since the time of Otto Warburg that metabolic alterations go hand in hand with transformation. Building from this knowledge, in more recent years it has come into focus that many different tissues and cell types undergo metabolic changes that directly impact their function and differentiation. As such, correct metabolic re-wiring is beneficial and a requirement for appropriate cellular function, while aberrant metabolic reprogramming can lead to inappropriate function and have implications on a wide variety of disease states. In this meeting we aim to bring together researchers from different areas of biology, that may otherwise have little crossover, but for their common interest in how metabolism impacts cell differentiation and function.

Topics will span diverse areas such as cancer metabolism, organismal metabolism in disease, metabolic pathway engagement in cell function, metabolites as signaling molecules, mitochondrial biology, nutrient sensing, metabolism in tissue homeostasis and repair, neurometabolism, and metabolism in host-microbe interactions. This interdisciplinary meeting will bring together researchers working on immunity, metabolism, cancer, stem cells, neurobiology, and host-microbe interactions to gain a more integrated understanding of how metabolism impacts health and disease, with the aim of moving research in the field forward.

Key Sessions

  • Mitochondria
  • Metabolism and Host/Microbe Interactions
  • Stem Cell Metabolism
  • Neurometabolism
  • Nutrient Sensing
  • Cancer Metabolism
  • Metabolism in Tissue Homeostasis and Repair
  • Metabolites as Signaling Molecules
  • Cell Metabolism in Disease and Inflammation

Student Offer

Take advantage of this fantastic opportunity for students! Fully paying academics can bring a student for only $785. Unfortunately, Postdocs are not eligible. Both registration packages include; accommodation for the 13, 14, 15 May 2022 (on a shared basis for students) and a food and beverage package for the conference period. Once registered, please contact Chloe Trundle to obtain a special registration link for your student.

Target Audience

We anticipate that the meeting will lead to the adoption of new technologies that will accelerate the rate of discovery in the field, encourage new collaborations between laboratories that may not have had previous interactions, and promote a focus on translational applications.  We expect attendees to emerge from the meeting with a clearer picture of how these different disciplines come together to shape our understanding of how metabolism impacts health and disease. We also expect that this meeting will help illuminate new areas of research in the field, and identify critical gaps in our knowledge that need further study in order to move the field forward. We plan for this meeting to be an exceptional opportunity for students, postdocs, and junior group leaders to meet more senior scientists and foster interactions that will increase their chances of success.

Educational Need

Attendees will leave the meeting with a stronger understanding of how metabolism in a variety of cell types and tissues impacts health and disease. We hope that researchers from diverse biological disciplines, such as those who study cancer and those who study immunology, will as a result of their interactions, forge new collaborations founded in their mutual appreciation that engagement of particular metabolic pathways shapes cell function and fate. Given the resurgence that metabolism has seen in recent years, we think our meeting will appeal broadly to many researchers across a variety of disciplines, many of whom are interested in investigating metabolic changes in their particular systems.

Location

Cancun is a delightful combination of natural beauty, islands, ecological reserves and white sandy beaches. However, besides sun, sand and sea, this destination also offers an infinite variety of underwater activities to choose from: the diving, snorkelling and fishing here are outstanding and you will find an undersea world packed with tropical fish that live on the second largest barrier reef in the world. Sports enthusiasts might choose one of the many eco-tourism activities, such as cycling or hiking through the tropical forest or kayaking through mangroves, or something a little more adventuresome, like zip lining through the treetops.

Apart from the more well-known ancient Mayan archealogical sites such as Tulum, Cobá and Chichén Itzá you may like to visit the Aktun Chen caverns, voted one of the Top 10 underwater walks by National Geographic described as a truly magical experience.

On the day of your presentation please make yourself known to our AV technician who will be present in the conference room. We advise running through your presentation at least 30minutes prior to your session commencing to ensure your slides and any videos or animations appear as expected. We prefer our speakers to run their presentation from the master PC or Mac, however, if you prefer to use your own laptop then please notify us prior to the session. A HDMI or VGA cable is usually available on the podium.

Our AV technician will apply your microphone and provide a combined slide advancer and laser pointer.

We ask all speakers to adhere to their time slots and respect their fellow presenters. A visual traffic light aide will be available to warn presenters as their time decreases.

Please make sure your presentation adheres to the following guidelines.

Aspect Ratio: On Screen Show (16:9)
File Type: Please save your presentation in PPT, PPTS or Keynote format.

Posters

We have several poster opportunities available at this meeting. To be considered for a poster presentation, please register for the conference and upload your abstract when prompted to do so. You will be able to monitor the status of your abstract through your Fusion account and you will also receive an email if you are successful or unsuccessful.

Please use the abstract template provided (see below) and ensure your abstract is no longer than one page in length.

Our poster boards can accommodate a maximum poster size of A0 (1189H x 841W mm), portrait in orientation. Posters exceeding this size may not fit on the poster boards provided and therefore we may be unable to display your poster, so please kindly keep to these measurements.

Displaying & Presenting Your Poster

Please bring your poster to registration and hand this to a member of the Fusion team. They will advise of your poster number and display your poster for you.

Your poster will remain on display for the duration of the conference, allowing presenters to take advantage of the refreshment breaks and free time for valuable networking opportunities, in addition to the official poster session.

Please check the programme and note the date and time of the poster session(s). Your poster will be judged during the poster session and prizes will be awarded at the Gala Dinner.

Posters will be taken down by the Fusion team and will be ready for collection at the Fusion desk on the final day of the conference.
